Dr. Bennett from the TMJ Sleep Centre stopped by Good Things Utah to talk about the struggles of sleep apnea.

Dr. Bennett treats patients who suffer from sleep apnea but aren’t able to tolerate a CPAP machine, which is about 60% of individuals. He helps his patients keep their airways open with the help of oral appliances and Xlear Nasal Spray.

So how do you know if your partner has sleep apnea? Snoring, choking, or gasping for air are all very common with individuals suffering with sleep apnea. Here are some medical problems linked to sleep apnea:

  • Digestive Disorders

  • High Blood Pressure

  • Diabetes

  • Heart Disease

  • Stroke

  • Shorter Lifespan

  • Obesity

  • Sexual Dysfunction

  • Fatigue

Dr. Bennett brought with him Miguel, who suffers from sleep apnea. He was prescribed a CPAP machine, but after using it for a short while stopped wearing it as he slept. Why did he do this? His wife was having trouble sleeping next to him while he was wearing a large, cumbersome mask.

He and his wife were still struggling to get a good night's sleep, however. For Miguel, no matter how long he slept, he wasn’t waking up feeling rested. As for his wife, she was having difficulty sleeping for a new reason…his snoring. This lead to Miguel spending many nights sleeping on the couch or in the other room; not an ideal situation for a married couple.

Luckily, Miguel was referred to Dr. Bennett, who helped him get a good night’s rest without the use of his CPAP machine. Now Miguel and his wife can sleep in the same bed again, and wake up feeling rested.

So, how did Dr. Bennett help? The airway behind your tongue is actually the most collapsible part; so when you lay on your back your tongue can fall into that airway causing a block. Dr. Bennett has an appliance that you put in your mouth that keeps the airway from collapsing. This keeps the airways open and stops any noise such as snoring or gasping. While the appliance keeps the mouth airway open, Xlear Nasal Spray helps keep the nasal airway open and clear.

Why does Dr. Bennett recommend Xlear Nasal Spray above others?  Many nasal sprays contain steroids, which can decrease collagen in the nose and cause long term nose bleeding. Xlear is a non-steroid nasal spray, so you get nothing but clear airways without the harmful side effects.

Breathe Xlear this Valentine’s Day with the help of Xlear Nasal Spray.
